Krishna Janmashtami—sometimes called Gokulashtami or Krishna Jayanti—is one of the most important Hindu celebrations. It marks the birth of Lord Krishna. This year, on August 26, 2024, millions around the world will come together for a filled with joy, devotion, & reflection.
The Importance of Krishna Janmashtami
People celebrate Janmashtami with much enthusiasm in India and many other parts of the world. Lord Krishna is seen as the eighth form of Lord Vishnu. He represents love, wisdom, & fun. His teachings, especially in the Bhagavad Gita, inspire many to live righteously & devote themselves to their faith.
On Janmashtami, temples are decorated beautifully! The sounds of "Jai Shri Krishna" echo in the air as devotees gather for prayers. ISKCON temples become lively hubs of celebration, attracting countless worshippers who join in various religious activities.
Devotees usually fast all day long. They break their fast only at midnight—the time when Krishna was born! Throughout the day, you’ll hear joyful songs and see people reading scriptures. There’s also something called Raslila, where actors perform scenes from Krishna’s life.
In Maharashtra, there’s a fun tradition called Dahi Handi. Young men form human pyramids to break open pots filled with curds, just like Krishna did when he was a little boy trying to steal butter!
