My Dog Skip, A review and a trailer
My Dog Skip Review.
A boy, a pet dog and memories from childhood is a popular issue and it`s sinking to the public. Entertainment industry knows this and likes to put out movies like this on a regular basis.
Famous dogs like Lassie, Air Bud and Beethoven touch people and this time you`ll get to know a dog named Skip.
It`s year 1942 and there`s a war in europe. A small town, Yazoo have to pay it`s toll; Young men are going to war but Young Willie Morris (Frankie Muniz) doesn`t care about the war. He`s focusing to happily live his childhood. Still, how happy can a child`s life be without a dog?
Willie`s dad (Kevin Bacon) is bitter because he has lost his leg in war and he doesn`t want a dog in their house. In fact, If it`s up to him, Willie will never have a dog.
But as you know, mother knows the best! Willie`s mom (Diane Lane) is standing by his son and she has decided they will have a dog…(yeah, that`s how it goes in real life also, if women want something, they will get it
…So it`s not a surprise willie`s biggest wish will become true and he will get Skip as a birthday gift. Skip brings much joy and new adventures to willie`s life and as Willie grows up, skip plays a big part in the process.
In Fact, the image of 1940`s in the film is attractively built and you almost feel like you want to live in 40`s while you watch the movie. Also, Family idyll in My Dog skip is described brilliantly.
It feels so untrue that in such a harmonice times humanity experienced it`s darkest moments but In this movie, war events are distant and space is given to a stronger and more constructive theme: childhood.
The story is warm and entertaining, although at some points it`s a little syrupy and pathetic. (And The closing phrase goes so syrup it`s almost disgusting…)
The most successful actor in My Dog Skip is the dog, who does lots of neat tricks. Kevin Bacon is making a strong performance as tight, but a loving father. Diane Lane smiles through the movie, and she`s doing good job.
Still, Frankie Muniz, the star of the show, is the weakest link in the movie. by all means his performance is not bad but some sort of his gestures are disturbing, at least for me. One weakness of Muniz is a limited ability to use facial expression. It`s almost like he has on/off switch. He looks happy or sad through the movie and there is lack of other nuances of how Willie Morris is feeling. At least it is hard to see.
…But he is a young actor, of course, and it`s easy to forgive his lacks.
My Dog Skip is based on a short story and the author has developed the story based on his own experience. It is pleasant to think that this story could be true. For people who have lost their beloved dog, this film is a must, because the dog’s role as a family member and long-standing friend in this film is understood really good.
